It’s hard to say exactly what it was that drove us to band together and start a business. Perhaps it had something to do with the radical climate fomenting as the depth of Wall Street’s fraud became clear; it galvanized us. None of us wanted to feel complicit in the greed of the financial industry, of course, but it was more than that: we were compelled to prove that there was an alternative. At the very least, we had been stripped of the idealism that goodwill and humanity held more sway in our economy than the power of the dollar. More and more, when we got together to catch up over a coffee that autumn, the conversation turned to numbers. We found ourselves asking not whether urban agriculture could feed cities of the future—we knew it couldn’t—but, rather, whether an urban agriculture business, which was inherently committed to environmental stewardship and community engagement, could be fiscally sustainable as well. We never explicitly articulated it to one another, or even to ourselves, but each of us was driven to dispel the notion that business and greed were intrinsically linked. We were determined to prove there was space for compassion in commerce.

It didn’t hurt that urban agriculture seemed like an endeavor perfectly suited to each of us and, moreover, that our personalities complemented one another’s. Chris loves to launch projects—like a shark, he seems to thrive only when moving forward. Ben needs a challenge, and writing a business plan for a fiscally solvent rooftop farm was certainly challenging. Gwen doesn’t like theorizing about things for longer than thirty seconds. Once she’s decided an idea is good, she wants to act on it. Brandon can rally support better than a mascot during the final seconds of a championship game—if he’s rallying for something he believes in.

We all agreed that our hometown needed more agriculture practiced within its borders, but having practiced it ourselves, we realized there was a reason the existing urban agriculture projects relied on grant funding to sustain themselves. Farming is a humble business, and New York City has little room for humble businesses. Yet we also knew that one only has so much power advocating for things. We all shared the belief that running a project profitably was the only way to prove possibility. That mutually held conviction was ultimately what propelled those early conversations about our nascent company from passionate lip service about a hypothetical model to the early brainstorms of a business-to-be.

Ben was being approached left and right by candidates who wanted to work with him on a variety of local food projects, but it was our shared goal of creating a business that could grow over time and be replicated in cities all over the world that led him to consider leaving behind the rooftop farm he’d built to work with us. The more time Ben, Gwen, myself, and our friends at Roberta’s spent together, the more we realized we had a special kind of chemistry, diverse skills, and shared ambitions. It would take years for us to realize just how special our chemistry was as a team, and even longer to grow that team into what it is today. But back then, in the fall of 2009, it was just beginning to dawn on each of us that we had met the people with whom we wanted to start a business.

A great read especially for people in the throes of planning ...
By Barbara M. Taylor-laino
A great read especially for people in the throes of planning and developing a unconventional style business - reads like a novel as well as a business guidebook. You cannot help but anticipate a sequel to see what happens next with Brooklyn Grange ....

I run a small organic farm business and I was able to compare and contrast the experiences, decisions, and results made by Brooklyn Grange and broaden my own understanding of my successes and failures and farming as a business... a very supportive read for me!

A sustainable future is possible
By Malvin
"The Farm on the Roof" by Anastasia Cole Plakias is one of the most compelling, original and thought-provoking business books I've ever read. Ms. Plakias is a talented writer who also happens to be a founder and vice president of Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm. Offering fantastic insights into business, life and community, this outstanding book will interest everyone who believes a sustainable future is possible.

Ms. Plakias lovingly tells the story of BGRF and the people who made it happen. The author was one of a handful of like-minded Millennials who craved more than mental labors. The onset of the Great Recession, which revealed the immorality of finance capitalism, compelled her and a coterie of fellow New Yorkers to try their hands at a more authentic kind of work offering more than financial reward. As the author introduces us to the remarkable individuals who turned vision into reality, we can not but gain admiration for the intelligence, determination and spirit of everyone involved in the venture.

However, Ms. Plakias understands perfectly well that bottom-line profitability is crucial. On that point, it was interesting to see how BGRF used data to negotiate contracts and plan their growing strategies in a way that maximized revenues. Of course, locating the farm on a roof top in NYC allows the enterprise to market produce to local restaurants and other specialty end users who are willing to pay above-market rates for privileged access to fresh, healthy and tasty organic foods.

Ms. Plakias goes on to talk about a number of related issues that should interest business and general interest readers alike. She discusses the importance of selecting partners who understand the value-add of the business to their own. For example, BGRF had some difficulty finding the right site until they found a landlord who was interested in raising the value of the property to tenants and community. The farm offered an urban escape that was ideal for hosting events such as weddings, film premiers, photo shoots, and the like; thus raising the profile of the property and of course, its value.

Ms. Plakias emphasizes that farming remains the business' core competency. To be sure, success has spawned opportunities to parlay the partner's expertise into green roof consulting services across the city. As the BGRF farms reach out to school children, refugees and ordinary people in the community with its implicit message of sustainable business practices, the author hopes that the enterprise will help inspire a movement.

I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.

Ever think of ditching your 9 to 5?
By J Powell
Not many books inspire me to strive for a better
life for myself but this book hit that mark.

This seems to be written as an adventure and unfolds as an ethical
business plan.

Reading some of the first hand accounts, sent chills down my spine.

Frankly, the quality writing, "puts you there."

Rising from the ashes of 2008-9 Financial crisis it requires guts
to take risks of this magnitude, but the reward has paid of
in spades, and more directly, in the form of this book.

Any one of the hurdles that they cleared to achieve their
goals, might have derailed most of us,but this group, kept their eyes on the prize and really
wanted to do something that was both profitable, meaningful and sustainable.

As the authors mention, it wasn't with rose-colored glasses that
they took this on, but their chronicled efforts and challenges have you rooting for
their success.

This is a modern day, Brooklyn success story that highlights, in
microcosm, the opportunities that abound when creativity meets
big city challenges.

Great book that curiously welled a feeling of pride and resurrected
a wonder of "what is possible".
